THE FAMILY. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together. ~Erma Bombeck

The Medina River

To escape the south Texas heat we headed to the Medina River for a day of swimming and fun with friends. It was so much fun. Here are just a couple of photos.

Hot day in May

Our air conditioner was broken for a full day - probably the hottest day of the year so far. So we had to spend some time cooling off at the pool.

My Sweet Mia

On Wednesday morning, after I finished getting ready, I went down to the kitchen and found this on our kitchen chalkboard.

I was so amazed. Mia and Cole had woken up when I was in the shower and went downstairs to leave me a note. It was the sweetest thing ever. Mia can be so thoughtful when it comes to things like this. She's amazing.

Our Trip to DALLAS

Last weekend we had a mini-vacation to Dallas with our good friends and their kids. It wasn't a long trip but we had so much fun.
On the first day we went to the zoo. Dallas has a really fun zoo. We made some great memories there. The kids got soaked, were frightened by monkeys getting a little too close to the glass, and did lots of rock climbing. It was a blast.

Afternoon Excitement

After our fun filled morning at the Zoo we headed to the Galleria Mall to visit the American Girl Store and do some shopping. From the parking garage we went into Saks Fifth Avenue, and needing to go downstairs but unable to find an elevator, we decided to take our double stroller on the escalater. Dumb idea. Drew had Luke in the stroller and I was holding Cole behind him. Cole wiggled out of my arms and ran down the stairs, past Drew and the stroller to get to Jake. When he got near the bottom I had a horrible sinking feeling. So I ran past Drew too and before I could reach Cole he tripped and fell right at the bottom. The escalator steps were causing him to roll and he couldn't stop and get up. The machine sucked his little bum into the teeth at the bottom. I grabbed him as quick as I could and had to yank with all my might to get him out. It shredded his shorts and pinched his bum pretty good, but he walked away with all 10 fingers, thank goodness. I was just so glad I had inspiration to get down there. There was no way Drew could have reached him because he had the stroller. Here's the result. And I must say I got some pretty crazy stares from people in the mall, who saw me taking a photo of my boy's bum, but it's all for the sake of blogging.

Mia was beyond excited to go to the American Girl store. She even got a "Mia" doll of her very own.

After shopping for dolls we decided to ice skate in the bottom level of the mall. What a blast!!! Drew had quite a workout trying to keep Mia and Cole on their feet.

Our last day in Dallas

On the last day of our trip we went to IKEA, which is always a blast for me (not so much for Drew). Although Drew did find a cow hide for $199 and is still considering purchasing it. He's always wanted one of those. After that shopping trip we went to the old part of Dallas, where the JFK assassination took place. Here's a photo of the book depository. The gunman was perched in the top corner window (the square one). We didn't have time to see the museum but took photos of the outside. I actually thought it was a creepy part of town, but the history is interesting.

The kids were great travelers, mostly because Mia insisted on listening to Hannah Montana almost the whole way. Even little Luke was a pretty good boy on the road.

Growing Up

Luke is 5 months old and getting more adorable every day.

Mia and Cole. These photos say so much about their relationship.

Easter Morning

Cole and Mia were so excited to see what the Easter bunny brought them. Both kids got a new Webkinz, a new movie, and lots of candy. Luke got "carrots" baby food and bunny ears. So cute.

The kids raced to find the easter eggs in the back yard. Both did a great job and had so much fun.

Spring Break and Easter

Here are some photos of the kids at a children's museum over spring break. They had so much fun.

Mia and Cole loved decorating the Easter eggs. Cole needed a lot of help but he did a great job.

FUNNY STORY

Funny Story challenge. I got the idea from my sister. And anyone that reads this, I challenge you to write a funny story for all to read. Help brighten a persons day.

OK here goes. My favorite story is titled: Drew and the Opossum.

Drew and I had been married for a couple of years and were living in our small two story rental condo in Kensington, Maryland. And if any of you have lived in the east, you know that when it rains, IT RAINS! One night Drew was bored and wanted to see a movie. We had been arguing (about something dumb I’m sure) so I didn’t want to go. And since he didn’t want to be cooped up in an apartment with an ornery wife he decided to go by himself.

It had been pouring rain for a couple of hours but had just started to let up. Drew grabbed his keys and headed for the door while I sat on the couch. As soon as he opened it, Drew let out a silly little girl squeak and slammed the door quickly. He stood there for a moment and didn’t move. Then he turned to me and said in a very frightened voice “There was a opossum on the porch.” I thought he was being an idiot but he just stood there and didn’t move. It was almost as though he wasn’t sure what to do next. He looked at me and said that what looked like a huge rat, dripping wet, was sitting on our porch and the moment he opened the door it turned towards him and hissed, showing its ugly teeth. All very creepy and such. I just said “whatever” and kept watching tv.

He stood there for a few more moments, then finally Drew came up with a plan. He disappeared for a couple of minutes upstairs, then came back down with a golf club in hand. He wouldn’t let this monster stop him from going to the movies. NO WAY! He opened the front door again, very slowly this time. He couldn’t see anything but wanted to be safe so he put the golf club through the crack in the door and wiggled it around for a bit. He realized the opossum was gone so he finally opened the door all the way. The little old lady across the hall had heard all the door slamming and opened her door to see what was going on. She stood there and watched Drew and his wiggling golf club. I’m sure she thought he was a lunatic. Drew finally noticed her and said “I saw a opossum on the porch.” She nervously looked at him and said in a very polite but totally freaked out voice “OK” and closed her door slowly.

Drew came back inside and said that the monster was gone and that he was going to the movies. I said OK and just started watching tv again. I watched tv for a good ten minutes after Drew had left the house. During a commercial break (You know, pre-TIVO days) I got up to get a snack. I wanted to see if it was still raining out side so I went to the dining room window, which was in the front of the house. I looked out the window and to my amazement, I noticed that Drew’s truck was still parked in the parking lot. I thought that was odd because I was SURE he wouldn’t walk to the movie theater and also noticed that my car was also parked in the parking lot. Where was he? I looked all around until I finally looked directly down below the window. There was Drew, about 12 feet below the dining room window, poking his golf club into the bushes ever so carefully. I almost didn’t see him because we had two tall trees that stretched three stories right in front of the dining room window. It was a dark night because the clouds were covering the moon, and the only noise outside was the sound of cars passing on the street in front of our place.

Being the mean wife that I am, I thought I would tease him a little. I was convinced he wouldn’t fall for it, but I wanted to do it anyway. I wanted him to think that the opossum was up in the trees above his head. So I very carefully slid the dining room window open, put my face up to the screen, and started yelling a crazy noise that sounded like a dog being eaten by something. I have no idea what a rabid opossum sounds like so I just made up the noise and yelled it loud. AS LOUD AS I COULD.

The moment the first squeal left my lips, Drew jumped two feet in the air, threw his hands high above his head and swung the golf club around his body in crazy wild circles, all while running as fast as he possibly could to his truck. He seriously looked like an escaped mental patient. His run wasn’t even a run. It was more of a crazy skip or something. He yanked the truck door open and jumped in faster than I have ever seen anyone move and slammed the door behind him. He looked up at the trees, thinking he would see the rabid opossum, but alas, all he could see was his mean wife in the window, laughing her head off. So he sat there for a moment. He wasn’t smiling. He rolled his window down six inches, turned his head sideways so just his face was protruding from the truck window and yelled “That wasn’t funny, Melissa.” But he was wrong. He was so wrong. I couldn’t stop laughing. He was so embarrassed that he started up his truck and drove to the movie theater. I laughed harder then I have ever laughed in my life and didn’t stop for at least a half hour. Big tough Drew sure looks funny when he’s scared.

Baby Cereal - Luke's Not a Fan

On March 5th Luke had his first taste of Rice Cereal. As you can see, he wasn't much of a fan. I thought it would get better, but here we are, one week later, and he still isn't interested. I guess we'll just keep trying. In the mean time, he's growing like a weed. At his Four Month appointment he weighed 18.5 Pounds. Holy Heavy!

Melissa's Birthday!

The Cake...

This beautiful chocolate cake was one of the best birthday presents I have ever received. Weeks before my birthday I told Drew that the only thing I wanted for my birthday was a "homemade" birthday cake made by him and the kids.

Sure enough, the day before my birthday, Drew came home from work with all the ingredients to make this scrumptious dessert. The kids mixed and stirred and poured and put their blood, sweat, and tears into the cake. After it baked Drew decided to speed the cooling process to insure they could decorate it before bedtime, by putting it in the fridge. During transport, he accidently dumped the whole cake on the floor.

The kids weren't upset though. They just said "Can I have some now?" I told Drew it was OK, and the fact I got him and the kids on video cooking together was present enough. But NO, Drew wouldn't be defeated. He stayed up until 11:00 that night making a new cake and decorating it. And this was the result. A fabulously colorful and YUMMY birthday cake. Just for me. I was thrilled. I feel like the luckiest woman to have such a great husband. And on my birthday he brought flowers home too. We went to Texas Roadhouse for a birthday dinner. And finally came home and ate the yummy cake. It was probably the best birthday I've ever had. Simple and wonderful.

The Cowboy Shirt

The tradition continues. This vintage 1970's cowboy shirt was worn by Drew when he was a little baby. It's the only piece of clothing from his childhood and I've made sure that both my boys had a chance to wear it. Here's a couple of photos of Luke in it.

Blessed in the New Year

Our three amazing kids constantly remind us of how blessed we are and how fast time flies. We'll most likely be moving from Texas in just a few months and it feels strange that we may not be back, even though so many memories were made here. First days of school, the birth of a baby, new friends, broken bones, first steps, new discovories, and lots of laughs. We are so excited for the adventure that awaits our little family, but we will never forget all the great moments we experienced and the friends that we made.

The Tale of a Broken Clavicle

On December 20th Cole decided to take a tumble out of a friends kitchen window. He was walking on the window sill and pushed right through the screen falling 3 feet to the grass below. We took him to the doctor where she proclaimed "Wow, that's a remarkable break." She was talking about his right clavicle. The treatment... a lovely sling and a follow up appointment with orthopedics in one week. It's been a difficult injury for a little boy who's convinced he's capable of becoming a super hero if he practices hard enough. Maybe in the future he'll think twice before performing window sill stunts.

Little Luke

Isn't he a Doll? On Christmas Eve he'll be 8 weeks old. Time flies.

No More School = CRAZY HAIR

Mia loves the fact that school is out for two whole weeks. Not because she can sleep in or spend time with her family. It's because she can let her hair go wild! No hair gel, elastics, pins, or hair spray. She's in heaven. That is, until Sunday when we get ready for church.

Merry Christmas 2007

Tis the season to be busy, busy, busy! With a new baby, everything seems more challenging, but we are still very excited about Christmas and the whole holiday season. If only we could get some real Christmas weather. South Texas Decembers are something I will never get used to.

Here's our "Santa Baby"
