THE FAMILY. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together. ~Erma Bombeck

The House That Built Me

My parents sold their house.  The house I was raised in.  The house I spent my entire youth.  All my young formative years.  So my sister Jill and I spent several days in June cleaning it out.  Clearing out almost 40 years of memories, to make way for change.

After all the work, and with only a few items left inside, I was left at the house by myself to really think about the years I spent in that home.  It wasn't always perfect, but for the most part it was a wonderful experience.  All the memories that popped in my head were ones of joy.  And they were all triggered by the details of the house.  The little things that through years of wear and tear were never replaced.  So I pulled out my camera and took several pictures of these little details.  I don't want to forget them.  I don't want to forget where I came from.  Not all the item are attached to the house, but they have always been a part of it, so it feels like they are inseparable.  I'm sure the only ones who will truly appreciate this are my sisters.  They are the only ones to share in my experience.

After years of weather, you can hardly see Chandra's, and Jennifer's, handprints.  Mine and Jill's are practically worn away.  But you can still see the year was 1987.

The piece of concrete in the grass.  Still not sure why it's there, but we always loved to hop to it, and stand on it.

You can almost see the "32" on the step.  The step that was ALWAYS home base when we played tag or other games.

As I cleaned the house I kept a log of some of the memories that popped into my head.

* Listening through the heating vent to Chandra's phone conversations with her friends.
* The front door being painted black and white, and looked like a sideways bow tie.  Whose idea was that anyway?
* Making a clubhouse under the stairs.
* The basement haunted house and George wearing Mom's old wig.
* Throwing the tennis ball over the house to each other (and trying to catch it).
* The laser pointer incident (I won't go into further details)
* Dressing up Mischief the cat in baby clothes, and putting the poor thing in the shower.
* Eating scrambled eggs and ketchup before going to afternoon Kindergarten with George.
* We knew each house on the street by the last name of the family that lived there.  Except for the "Hippie House", which will always be called the Hippie House.
* Laying in the hallway under the swamp cooler with Jill, completely covered with blankets, except our faces of course.
* Playing night games with all the kids in the neighborhood.  The light post was always where we met.
* Playing outside all day, until Mom would yell out the window that dinner was ready.
* Eating fried chicken every Sunday.
* Seating assignments at the dinner table.  I was always at the foot of the table.
* Aunt Connie and Mom making Christmas candy (well, Mom making it, and Aunt Connie eating it).
* Jumping from the top of the stairs to my Daddy waiting at the bottom.
* Playing "Fire Drill" with Jill.  I would lower her out the second story window, then jump down to the grass below.  We practiced it several times a day.
* Laying on the floor with a blanket and my feet on the heating vent while I watched TV.
* Hitting tennis balls against the side of the house.
* Always afraid of the black widows underneath the front porch.
* Taping Christmas cards to the coat closet door.
* The creaking sound the stairs make as you walk down them.
* The way all the windows in the house would fog up on Thanksgiving, from all the yummy cooking.

Change is good, or so they say.  We shall see.

Trip to the Country

On June 17th we drove to Grandma and Grandpa's house so the kids could spend a week in the country.  On the way up we had to stop at Bridal Veil Falls.  The kids just love going there.  I warned them that the water would be freezing, because it's just melted snow, but that didn't stop them from wading in.

The day after we arrived, we went on a "field trip" to the local fish hatchery.  It was so much fun.  Leave it to Dixie to find fun things to do.  The kids got to see the fish that will be placed in local, and not so local bodies of water.

They even have an area where you can feed the fish, and the huge fish just go crazy.  It was so cool.  There were even fish jumping up the man made waterfalls.  I took these photos with my phone so I didn't get a ton of great shots.

I left the kids there with Grandma for a few days while I headed to my parents house to get to work.  It was my first time being away from Ella and it was strange.  I think she had a great time bonding with Grandma though.

14th Anniversary

Drew and I have been married for 14 years now.  I can't believe it's been that long.  He sent me two dozen roses and a box of chocolates.  He's always doing wonderful, thoughtful things like that.  I love him very much and am grateful for him.  I can't imagine a better person to share my life with.

Farewell Tea Party

Mia's wonderful friends Hanna and Makenna are both moving to Europe so we decided to throw a surprise tea party for the two amazing girls.  We wanted to make it as much like the American Girl trip we had two years ago, as possible.  Jen did an AMAZING job putting it together.

She even got them these beautiful  matching necklaces so they can always remember each other.  She's really gone to miss them.

Jailhouse Rock

Mia's Final Dance Recital was today. She performed a jazz dance to "Jailhouse Rock" and it was adorable.  Here's a photo of Mia after the show with three of her dear friends, who were also in the class, Katelyn, Aspen, and Makenna (who is moving tomorrow morning - so sad!).

Here's a photo of the girls with Hanna, another friend, who is moving on Monday.  Mia has the most amazing friends, so it's really hard to see them go.

I was lucky enough to get a babysitter for the three little kiddos, so I could enjoy the show without any distractions.  Afterwards I took Mia to dinner and ice cream.  It was such a fun Mother Daughter date.

Expander

Poor Mia and her crazy teeth.  Mia has 6 permanent teeth.  Two on top, and 4 on bottom.  Unfortunately her top teeth are struggling to come in, because there's just no room.  You can see that one of her front teeth is overlapping the one next to it.  That baby tooth isn't even loose yet!!!  So we went to the orthodontist and he recommended an "expander" to widen her top palate, which is in serious cross bite.  So poor thing was able to get it installed on the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL.  Not after school, mind you.  BEFORE school.  So she was lucky enough to spend her last day struggling to speak, and trying to keep from drooling on herself.

Mia has had it for the past few days and she's finally getting used to it.  She still struggles when she eats, but it's getting better.  Every night I get to crank it with a key, which pushes her teeth further apart.  Good fun!  It will still be a while before she gets braces, since she has so many baby teeth.  But at least this is a start in prevented some of the issues she could have in the future.

This picture was taken in the waiting room, just before it was installed.

Final Soccer Game

On June 4th, Cole and Mia had their final soccer game.  Cole's was at 9:00 in the morning, and Mia's at 12:45, so that meant a day dedicated to soccer.  Cole did amazing on his final game.  He tried his hardest and played the best he could.  I was so proud of him.

Ella sat in the stroller most of the time, because she loves to "take off" when she gets the chance.

Cole never lets anyone score when he's the goalie.

Poor Luke was fine that morning, but as the game progressed, he developed a fever.  He just laid on the blanket, refusing to move.  I felt so bad for him.

After the game, Cole received a medal and certificate, and poor Luke had to suffer through the awards ceremony.  By the time we got home he was in bad shape.  By lunch time it was clear that we were not going to be able to go to the afternoon game.  And we weren't able to find a ride for Mia, so she didn't even get to play in her final game.  I felt awful, but not as bad as Luke did, so I guess we had no choice. But Mia was a really good sport about it.  I'm super proud of her for that.  That night was the Chugg's farewell party, and we had to miss that as well.  I was really bummed, but it was for the best.
